Russia to host summit of BRIC countries

[South-South Cooperation]

Russia will host the first summit of leaders from the BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China - the largest four emerging economies of the developing world.

The meeting represents a important milestone for the BRIC countries which have been at the forefront of global growth and foreign direct investment in emerging market in recent years.

As developed nations work to repair the crumbling global financial system, the BRIC countries will be financing their deficits, this is especially the case for the United States. Naturally, the BRIC countries are demanding a bigger role in the process of rebuilding the global financial system.

''This trip will expand mutual trust, work toward solutions on how to tackle the financial crisis, and solidify economic ties among the BRIC nations,'' Li said, using the common term that is an acronym of the first letters of the four countries' names.

"Goooooooo Team!" -- BRIC Leaders

Other highlights in the realm of South-South Cooperation which will come to pass in Russia next week during this little get together of the BRIC countries include:

- The 60th Anniversary of China-Russia Cooperation

- China and Russia will sign a variety of economic, trade and cultural cooperation deals during the visit

- The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a China and Russia led organization of Central Asian States. The group includes the nations of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Western observers, as reported by AP in this article, assert the group has served as a vehicle for Moscow and Beijing to limit Western influence in energy-rich Central Asia.

Personally, I don't think Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan or any of those other countries mentioned above in Central Asia where at the top of the U.S. "to-do" list to woo until the war in Afghanistan. The comment no less holds true considering that times have changed.

- Leaders from Afghanistan, Mongolia, Pakistan and India have been invited and will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as "observers"

That pretty much sums it up. Check back next week for more updates on this topic as the meet and greets begin in Russia. ChinaSouthAmerica will be keeping up to date and bring you all the drama as it unfolds.

[Uranium] -- India Bids for Stakes in Russian, Kazakh Uranium Mines to Fuel Reactors
Nuclear Power Corp. of India is bidding for stakes in uranium mines in Russia and Kazakhstan, and offered to build reactors in central Asia, Chief Executive Officer S.K. Jain said.

“We’re trying to achieve stakes in mines,” Jain said today in an interview at a Moscow nuclear forum organized by Rosatom Corp., the country’s nuclear holding company. The company is discussing buying into sites including the untapped Elkon deposit in Russia’s Far East, he added.

India, which suffers peak power shortages of as much as 17 percent, needs uranium to fuel 28 planned reactors and meet a target of adding 40,000 megawatts of nuclear generation by 2020. The second most-populous nation will seek an annual 1,500 metric tons of uranium for 60 years to fuel new reactors, Jain said.

“We’re exploring the possibility of a long-term partnership and not only for uranium supplies,” he said. India proposed building 220- to 500-megawatt reactors in Kazakhstan, which doesn’t yet have any nuclear power plants, he added.

[Brazil - Saudi Arabia] -- Saudi Arabia and Brazil are natural allies

By Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva

This week I will have the honor to be the first Brazilian President to officially travel to Saudi Arabia. I retain fond memories of the visit in 2000 of the then Crown Prince to Brazil. Since then, numerous high level visits have further strengthened the ties between our two countries and peoples.

Brazil prides itself on having roots in the rich cultural heritage of Arab civilization. Successive waves of immigrants from the Middle East have made their way to Brazil in search of a new horizons and a better life. Over the years they have contributed to forging present-day Brazil and to its diverse human landscape. Arab values, tastes and sensibilities are today an integral part of what it means to be Brazilian.

My trip to Saudi Arabia aims to explore and enhance these many-faceted affinities and the opportunities for cooperation that they offer. Much has been achieved over recent years, but much remains to be done if we are to fully realize the potential of two thriving economies that are making their mark on the global scene.

[China - Bahrain] -- Bahrain reviews construction ties with China
Co-operation between Bahrain and China in the construction sector was discussed at a key meeting.

Minster of State for Foreign Affairs and Tamkeen chairman Dr Nazar Al Baharna met a Chinese business delegation and discussed various issues of mutual interest.

Development of programmes that can reduce the dependency of construction companies on unskilled labour by introducing machinery and technological solutions was also highlighted.

[India - Kenya] -- Kenya, India to beef up ties in small industry sector
In yet another indication of India's growing interest in the East African region, the country's National Small Industries Corp (NSIC) has signed an agreement with Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) to strengthen cooperation in the small scale industry sector.

KIE is a state-run agency of Kenya to promote indigenous entrepreneurship and small and medium enterprises (SME).

According to media reports here, the partnership involves technology transfer, and marks a major step towards improving Kenya's quality standards in manufacturing, production and human resources.

"The government is keen to forge a viable partnership with friendly countries, particularly in the spirit of south-south cooperation," Kenyan Industrialisation Minister Henry Kosgey was quoted as saying.

[Asia - Africa] -- Asian Foreign Direct Investment in Africa
Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa by developing Asian economies is growing and has the potential to reach much higher levels. The present report notes that Africa-bound FDI is still a small percentage of the rapidly climbing foreign investments being made by Asian transnational corporations.

The rapid economic growth in Asia can be expected to lead to increased Asian investments in Africa, in both natural resources and manufacturing. In particular, the rapid industrial upgrading taking place in Asia provides ample opportunities for Africa to attract efficiency-seeking and export-oriented FDI from Asian economies.

India - Election results from the world's largest democracy

Newswire: India's Election Results

It is a beautiful process when a democratic country experiences a peaceful transition of leadership.

India's voters have spoken. On one side, celebrations swept India as supporters of the Congress Party celebrated their victory.

On the other, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, conceded defeat.

"The party accepts the verdict of the voters will full respect."

The Congress Party won as many as 260 seats. This puts Congress just short of a independent majority, but close enough to be able to form a stable coalition.

Good news for financial markets, which will welcome a stronger government with more capacity to push through market reforms. Expect Bombay's stock exchange to rally on Monday.

India suffers worst in Asian export decline -- FT Asia

India, Indonesia and South Korea reported significant year-on-year declines in exports on Friday.

However, a growing gap in trade performance was underlined by India’s latest figures, with exports tumbling 33 per cent in March to $11.5bn (€8.7bn, £7.7bn) from a year earlier – the biggest drop on record.

India’s exports to the US have fallen more sharply than those of China, South Korea and Brazil, according to a study by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Gems, pharmaceuticals, textiles, vehicles and auto parts were all hit in an overall 12 per cent drop in US exports between October and February.

“The sharp decline in our exports to the US, which accounts for 13 per cent of our global exports, is a matter of deep concern,” said Harsh Pati Singhania, the president of FICCI.

India's central bank cuts key rates by 25 basis points -- ChannelNewsAsia

MUMBAI: India's central bank on Tuesday lowered two key short-term interest rates by 25 basis points each, in an effort to arrest a slowdown in Asia's third largest economy.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lowered the repo – the rate at which it lends to commercial banks – to a record low of 4.75 per cent, from a peak of 9.0 per cent seen last year.

It also announced a cut in the reverse repo – the rate at which it borrows from banks – to 3.25 per cent.

"The major challenge at this stage is to support drivers for demand, to enable the economy to return to a high growth path," RBI governor D. Subbarao said in the annual policy statement for the year to March 2010.

Hong Kong's composite interest rate fell to 0.29 percent at the end of March from 0.33 percent at the end of February, the Monetary Authority of Hong Kong said on Tuesday.

China to launch more stimulus investment in Q2 --
China Securities Journal (CSJ)

The Chinese central government is expected to launch its third batch of stimulus investments in large domestic projects in the second quarter to further boost its economy, according to the China Securities Journal Tuesday, citing an unidentified source.

The central government has so far cashed in a combined 230 billion yuan (33.8 billion U.S. dollars) for its 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package announced last November to bolster the slowing economy, 100 billion yuan in the fourth quarter and 130 billion yuan in the first quarter.

The newspaper said the new money would continue to be poured in projects that could benefit people's livelihood, such as health and education sectors, big infrastructure projects, and housing for low-income earners. Previous investments were dedicated to similar purposes.

An official of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) confirmed the new investment, but said the exact amount was not decided yet. He spoke to Xinhua Tuesday morning on condition of anonymity.

Tata Nano hits the streets of India

The long awaited Tata Nano hit the streets of India on Thursday with the company and dealers around India confident of strong demand in light of the global economic crisis which has hit the auto industry especially hard.

With a sticker price of 100,000 rupee's ($2000) the Nano is by far the cheapest car in the world. Despite this tempting price, a major concern in many investors minds must have been how India's consumers would be able to secure loans or if they would even be willing to take out a loans for a car in such volatile economic times.

Thankfully the Tata Motors Finance (TMF), the financing arm of Tata Motors, today announced the launch of an attractive loan program which include no upper limit on the number of cars to be booked through TMF, once the customers have submitted the forms a booking amount would be made to Tata Motors on behalf of the customers, applicants who have been allotted the car do not loose any amount except cost of the booking form and initial payments.

To facilitate the booking process, multiple touch-points have been created all over the country. As part of the arrangement, TMF will be assisted by Tata Capital Limited, E-nxt Limited, Tata Motor dealers, Tata Securities outlets and all channel partners – DSAs & Vendors to ensure wider distribution. The booking scheme offered by TMF will enable a customer to book the Nano by paying an amount starting Rs 3,199/- only for the base model.

All in all, there's high hopes for the Nanao which Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata has said will "create a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for Indian families. Families of four -- and more -- are regularly seen balancing precariously on motorcycles weaving through the country's notoriously lethal congested traffic."

Opinion - Crisis an opportunity to rebalance Asian growth

Interesting... but the author of this interesting op-ed from CS.com is not actually listed. Rather CS.com reports the author of the editorial has been written by the "Acting Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank in Manila."

Here's an excerpt to grab your attention or click here to access the article in its entirety from CS.com

Today's global economic crisis is the worst since the Great Depression. And developing-Asia is being hit much harder than initially thought. It is now time-in fact it is an opportunity-to re-balance our recent rapid economic growth to help protect us from future external shocks and to strengthen our internal sources of growth.

Average growth in the region declined about three percentage points last year - to 6.3 percent. Our 2009 Asian Development Outlook now forecasts that growth will slow this year again by close to 3 percentage points - to 3.4 percent.

Many emerging Asian economies will suffer severe recession.

The region's two giants - China and India - are also seeing their rapid economic expansions curtailed. What does this mean to the people of our region? ADB estimates that more than 60 million will remain trapped in absolute poverty - surviving on less than $1.25 a day - people who in 2008/09 would have otherwise broken through the poverty threshold had 2007 growth rates continued.

Analysis: Tata Motors Launches the Tata Nano -- $2000 car

Tata Motors, one of my favorite emerging market companies for a variety of reasons, released it's long awaited Tata Nano today. The car is priced at a very affordable $2000 usd or 100,000 rupees.

Already being deemed "The People's Car," Tata Motors has high hopes for it's Nano. Tata Motors recently financed the purchase of Land Rover and Jaguar with debt and has bonds coming due this summer. Tata Motors also recently lost a great deal of money after having to abandon it's original factory it built for assembling Nano's because of local protests.

These two problems highlight the Tata's dire need to generate some cash. The Nano will hopefully help. The Indian government has also recently pledged to help certain state banks in some regions by offering subsidized loans to them if they make car loans to people looking to purchase a Tata vehicle.

Despite seeing it's stock plummet in value over the past 8 months, Tata Motors still offers a very attractive dividend of 7.8%. Yes the company is straddled with debt after its recent acquisition, but it does have a solid cash flow coming into from a relatively still well preforming market... a.k.a, India (at least when compared with other areas in the global economy).

Furthermore, there is a great deal of back logged demand for transportation in India. As the central government attempts to stimulate growth by expandinginfrastructure, Tata Motors will be a clear winner.

At the moment avg travel speeds on Indian roads are horrendous. Tata Motors can also take advantage of this because even though the specs of the Nano (see this Reuters article) are a bit lacking, there is no need to travel with a V-8 engine in India when you can rarely, if ever take your car above 30 miles per hour.

Increases in infrastructure spending will spur demand for cars and thanks to such the incredible growth of India and the increasing number of vehicles hitting the market every year will make the Nano very appealing in the years to come for new drivers hoping to get their hands on their first car in India.

On a side note, Tata Motors aquisiton of Land Rover and Jaguar may have come at a very bad time in the auto industry, but they no less did adquire two luxury car brands. This will give them the ability to one day penatrate western markets with greater ease and higher quality products.

There's already news Tata Motors plans to bring the Nano to the United States in 3 years time. If you don't believe me, check out this Reuters article from Today.

"I believe within the next three or so years we could develop a version of the Nano with options the U.S. market might want to have," said Ratan Tata, Tata Motors chairman."

India -- Tata Motors a cool emerging company

New Delhi/Mumbai: The social networking era has become a great aid for the Tata Motors' Nano sale buzz to flourish in the online world. The Nano campaign, prior to its release, has been intensified through its extension to networking sites like Facebook and Orkutmaking the 'world's cheapest car' known to a larger mass.

The company targeted the online audience through its own portal, www.tatanano.com, but the networking sites triggered a gushy response with people from all over the world asking for a similar car in their land too, reports Mint. Darlene in Facebook said, "Please bring this car to Toronto, Canada!!!" while Luis recommends the manufacturer to make the car in Columbia. "You guys should make the Nano in Colombia since it would be a good place to produce them; we are in the middle of the American continent so it can be easily transported anywhere from Canada to Argentina at a lower cost," Luis said.

Click here to read more about this cool story.

Also... if you happen to be interested in Tata Motors (TTM), a company which happens to making a car which will cost between $2500-$3000 here's a bit from Yahoo Finance and how the ADR listed in the states has been performing.

TATA MOTORS LIMITED manufactures commercial and passenger vehicles primarily in India. It offers passenger cars; multi-utility vehicles; and light, medium, and heavy commercial vehicles, including mini-truck, light two-tonne truck, heavy dumpers, ... click here for more from Yahoo Finance

Might be a decent buying time for a company with a very attractive Div & Yield of 0.35 (8.90%).
